Suesan Stovall Biography
“The role of the artists is exactly the same as the role of the lover;
if I love you, I must make you aware of the things you don’t
see.”
-James Baldwin
The artist, in the truest sense of the word, has the responsibility of
revealing the truth of the human spirit. Artists dig deep into the human
psyche, unearthing the mysteries of life for us to examine and explore.
There is something almost holy about the creative process. Art has the
never ending capacity to heal wounds, or simply turn on the light that
waits within.
I have been on the journey of revelation since childhood. Growing up as a
colored girl, with the streets of New
York City, America
as a backdrop, I needed to understand my place and identity in the
context of that condition. I had a deep longing to connect with the
Creator, the ancestors, and all of humanity to share what I found.
Through the medium of assemblage, my work is a continuing process of
reconstructing the impressions of those discoveries. I use the discards
of people’s lives, objects and photographs, found in thrift stores,
flea markets and trash around the world, to create images that offer a
chance to feel something perhaps forgotten. Perhaps to glimpse a moment
of the divine, soothe a restless heart. Or simply to offer a moment to
let the light shine.
