Karen Powell Biography
Graphic designer by day, fine artist by night...that’s how you would
describe the creative journey of Karen Powell. Powell’s training
began at Fisk University then onto Masters work at the University of Chicago. For
33 years Powell has been known for her corporate design style in the Boston
business community. Now we get to see the other
side of Powell as she ventures into the arena that she loves and has been
passionate about all her life... the fine arts.
Growing up in an urban environment has made Powell reflect on her childhood
in her work. She says, "In New York the streets were our playground. Whether
it was playing 'jacks', 'potsie, or 'double dutch' it was competitive and
street games were a vital part of our childhood development”. Children
had to be clever and creative to entertain themselves. The elements were
simple: bottle caps, a soft ball, chalk, and jump ropes, these were the
ingredients that made childhood magical in the city. Weaving those memories
and vintage photos into her work, brings her back to a time when life was
simple and children giggled on the front stoop. |
