Memphis Biography
Memphis (nee Mark Young in Detroit,
Michigan) is a Los Angeles
based artist working primarily in the mediums of mixed-media assemblage
and collage. While his expression has taken him in many different
creative directions, his present focus and body of work fall into two main
categories: Work that deconstructs Black Americana
and work that explores African
American, African and Afro-Cuban
mysticism.
His work with Black Americana incorporates actual antiques and
photographs that he has passionately collected over the years, as well as
his own photography, traditional media such as acrylics and pastels and
technology-based tools such as the computer. His creations aim to either
diffuse the bitter effigies that have been ascribed to African Americans
over the centuries or to simply tell 'the other side of the story'. This
agenda often results in original folktales and anecdotes rich with irony,
history and reverence for all those who had to endure this form of
systematic degradation.
