John Brown Biography
The purpose of art has always been to inspire, educate and reflect. The
building blocks in the implementation of creating artwork for me have
always begun with inspiration. Inspiration is the catalyst in a series of
five stages that shape & define what I refer to as “The
Architecture of the Soul.” The five stages are inspiration,
incubation, dedication, determination and execution. These are the
rudiments of the creative process. Interestingly enough, this process provides
a common thread that unites us all but at the same time makes each one of
us unique by laying down the framework for individual creativity and
allowing us to discover our own voice and artistic potential.
The path that leads a
person to be creative whether you dance, draw, paint or sculpt usually
evolves inside of this paradigm. It has the potential to manifest, and in
this case, attempt to represent the consciousness of humanity. When I
watch dancers, I realize that despite the differences in how we execute
our artistic inspiration, we share a common thread: we both begin our
creative process with inspiration. What drives me [inspiration] is what
drives them. In my opinion, nothing personifies this more than the
dancer, and being a figurative sculptor this has to be one of the most
interesting areas to explore. So art for me involves realizing and
focusing on the importance of recognizing and acknowledging similarities
with other people more than our differences. I have thus created a body
of work that explores the human condition, the inner foundation, with
themes we can all comprehend regardless of gender, cultural, &
ethnic, religious or social status.
I see in dancers a
certain sense of discovery, acquiescence, grace, surrender, mirth,
ascension and synergy etc. Their body language conveys all of these
themes, all sprung from the catalyst of inspiration. And these themes
essentially are the architecture of a good soul that all of us have the
ability to and ideally possess. As I am especially inspired by people who
soar to great heights, this body of work celebrates and honors the
creative and indomitable spirit and hopefully may inspire you to live
your life with a certain sense of “The Architecture of the
Soul”.
